Three Santa’s grottos in the Canterbury district have published their 2026 dates. The Christmas market’s grotto in St George’s Street starts on Saturday 28 November, from £13 a child, Wildwood at Herne Common runs its grotto on December weekends and every day from 17 to 24 December at £20 a child, and Meadow Grange Nursery in Whitstable has opened bookings for an outdoor grotto on December weekends, where some slots have already sold out. All three must be booked in advance.

Canterbury Christmas Market grotto, from £13

The market’s Santa’s Grotto with talking letterbox is in St George’s Street, “by the big tree (opposite McDonalds)”, and the market says it is “three times bigger” for 2026. Santa is in residence “from November 28th on selected dates”; the market itself opens on Thursday 12 November and runs to Christmas Eve. See our Canterbury Christmas market page for the market’s hours.

How a visit works, from the booking page:

  • Check in at the Elf Reception (arrive five minutes early), then write a letter to Santa in the Activity Hut and post it in the talking letterbox.
  • Each child meets Father Christmas and leaves with an age-appropriate gift. Children sit on a chair beside Santa, not on his lap.
  • It is a group activity, up to six children a session.
  • Two adults maximum per booking, and “accompanying adults do not pay for entry”.
  • Latecomers can join until the children go into the grotto itself; after that, entry is refused.
  • You can cancel up to seven days before for a refund minus the booking fee; inside seven days there is no refund, and bookings cannot be moved, only cancelled and rebooked.

Prices start at £13 (Canterbury Christmas Market: Santa’s Grotto). Last year’s grotto was from £12.50.

Breakfast with Santa and Santa Paws

  • Breakfast with Santa is at The Real Eating Company, first floor, Whitefriars Square, CT1 2TD: one 75-minute session a day at 9am to 10.30am from Saturday 19 to Wednesday 23 December, arrival from 8.30am. Children are £15, including breakfast, activities, a meet and greet with Santa and a small gift. Adults must book too, at £8.50 for a hot drink and pastry, with a maximum of two adults per child. The market cannot cater for gluten-free, nut allergies or vegan diets. A £1.50 booking fee is included in the total. The page also says “Prices at 2025 rates” (Breakfast with Santa).
  • Santa Paws, for dogs, is at the same venue on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December, 11am to 12pm, £5 a dog, up to 25 dogs a session, with a puppuccino, a gift and photos with Santa (Santa Paws).

Wildwood, Herne Common, £20 a child

Wildwood’s grotto runs on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December, then every day from Thursday 17 to Thursday 24 December, 10am to 5pm. It costs £20 per child, which includes an “exclusive 5 minute family visit with Santa”, a “luxury soft toy gift” and a personalised message from Santa (Wildwood: Santa’s Grotto).

Read the small print before you book:

  • Book one child at a time. The system “will only accept ONE booking (one child) at a time”, so siblings need separate bookings.
  • Park entry is extra before 3pm. If you visit between 10am and 3pm you also need a park ticket or membership. After 3pm grotto visitors do not pay park entry, “as the main park is closed to the public then”, and staff walk you to and from the grotto.
  • Tickets cannot be refunded, moved or transferred unless the event is cancelled.
  • You can take your own photos.

The booking page does not print a year, but the dates fall on the right days of the week for 2026 (5 December 2026 is a Saturday). Park tickets are £18 adult and £14 child including the voluntary donation (Wildwood: times and prices). Wildwood is at Herne Common, Herne Bay, CT6 7LQ.

Meadow Grange, Whitstable: outdoor grotto

Santa’s Grotto at Meadow Grange 2026 is at Meadow Grange Nursery, CT5 3BP, and raises money for local causes with the Whitstable Lions. Visitors walk through an “enchanted walkway” with a wishing tree, elf tunnels and Naughty or Nice lists before meeting Santa. Each child gets a token to swap for a toy of their choice in the Elf Toy Shop, with gifts for ages from birth to 12 (Meadow Grange on Ticket Tailor).

The booking calendar lists Saturday 5, Sunday 6, Saturday 12, Sunday 13, Saturday 19, Sunday 20 and Monday 21 December, each with 33 time slots. On 3 October, some slots were already fully booked on 5, 6, 12 and 21 December, and every date had slots marked low availability. The ticket prices appear only at the booking step.

Rules worth knowing:

  • Every person needs a ticket, including adults. Babies under one only need one if you want them to get a present.
  • A maximum of four children and six adults per slot; you see Santa as one family.
  • The grotto is outdoors, so dress for the weather. It is wheelchair friendly but the paths can be bumpy.
  • No refunds or swaps, and no prams or dogs inside.
  • Arrive at the garden centre 15 minutes before your slot, as the car park gets very busy.
  • For SEN visits, email ali@meadowgrangenursery.co.uk in advance.

Not yet published

We could not find a 2026 grotto at Howletts, and the Herne Bay Pier grotto listing on Visit Canterbury now returns a missing page. We will add any other grotto in the district once its organiser publishes 2026 dates and prices.

Getting there

The market grotto and Whitefriars are inside the city walls; the closest car parks and the park and ride sites are on our parking in Canterbury page, and the Canterbury roadworks and travel page lists closures. In 2025 the council made park and ride free on certain Christmas dates (details on our Christmas lights page); the 2026 offer has not been announced yet. Wildwood is on the A291 at Herne Common between Canterbury and Herne Bay, and Meadow Grange is in Whitstable.
