Canterbury Christmas Market opens Thursday 12 November and runs to Christmas Eve on three city-centre sites. Free entry; Santa bookings open 1 October.
Canterbury Christmas Market opens on Thursday 12 November 2026 at 10am and runs every day until Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December. It is free to walk into, and bookings for Santa’s Grotto and the other paid attractions open on Thursday 1 October. That is all from the organiser’s own website, which switched over to 2026 in September.
Updated 29 September: the organiser has published the 2026 dates, opening hours and booking prices. Earlier this month its site still showed only 2025.
Opening hours for 2026
The organiser’s visitor information page gives the run as “November 12th to Christmas Eve, December 24th 2026”, 43 days in a row, with these hours:
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 10am to 6pm |
| Saturday | 9am to 7pm |
| Sunday | 10am to 5pm |
| Christmas Eve | closes at 4pm |
These are the same hours as 2025. Late opening nights are announced separately on the market’s What’s On events page rather than built into the table, so check there before planning an evening visit.
Live music plays on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
What the market is
Three sections, all inside the city walls and a few minutes’ walk apart:
- Whitefriars Shopping Centre and the Marlowe Arcade
- St George’s Street, which the organiser also calls the High Street
- the Cathedral Precincts, reached along The Parade and right into Mercery Lane
The organiser’s count is more than 120 huts and 172 stallholders across 137 pitches, which it describes as one of the largest Christmas markets in the South East and the largest in Kent. Those are the same figures it published for 2025.
It is free. In the organiser’s words: “This is a FREE Christmas market to visit and no tickets are required.” The exceptions are the bookable activities.
The market is run by Rockhopper Events Ltd, company number 11241742, not by the city council.
Santa, breakfasts and the paid extras
Bookings open on 1 October. The prices listed on the market’s home page on 29 September 2026 are:
| Activity | From |
|---|---|
| Santa’s Grotto with talking letterbox | £13 |
| Breakfast with Santa | £15 |
| Santa Paws (bring the dog) | £5 |
| Dash’s Toy Workshop Rescue, VR ride | £5 |
| Lapland VR Experience | £5 |
Against 2025, the grotto has gone up from £12.50 to £13 and Santa Paws from £4 to £5. Breakfast with Santa is unchanged at £15.
Santa is “in residence from November 28th on selected dates”, so there is no grotto for the first two weeks of the market. Breakfast with Santa is served at the Real Eating Co., 16 Whitefriars Street, where you choose your breakfast on arrival.
Two booking rules from the organiser’s FAQ worth knowing before you pay:
- Spend £50 or more on bookable activities and get 10% off with the code XMAS2026 at checkout. It is new this year.
- You can cancel up to 7 days before for a refund, minus the booking fee. Inside 7 days there is no refund, bookings cannot be moved to another date, and there is no refund or rebooking if you arrive late. The organiser advises arriving 15 minutes early because Christmas traffic and parking in Canterbury “can be difficult”.
About those other 2026 dates
Early in September at least one national Christmas-market listing site was already publishing “11th November to 24th December 2026” for Canterbury, before the organiser had said anything. It was a day out: the market opens on 12 November, not 11 November. Use the organiser’s site, not a listing site.
Getting there and parking
The organiser gives CT1 2TF as the satnav postcode and points visitors to the car parks around Whitefriars and the park and ride. Its own warning is worth repeating: “roads and car parks in and around Canterbury can become extremely busy in the festive season so, please leave yourself plenty of time.”
Our Canterbury parking page sets out what the city centre car parks cost and where the park and ride sites are, which is the practical answer for a market Saturday. Check the roadworks and travel page too, because November and December road closures around the city walls change the approach. Last year the council ran free park and ride and free parking days around the lights switch-on; the 2026 offer has not been announced yet, and it will be on our Christmas lights page when it is.
Coaches: the drop-off point is on St George’s Lane, in front of Whitefriars Shopping Centre, about 400 metres from the Cathedral. There is no coach parking inside the city walls. Canterbury Coach Park is about a 10 minute riverside walk from the centre, takes cards and cash, and has toilets, disabled facilities, baby changing and water points.
What we will update
The late-night shopping dates, the grotto dates once bookings open, and the council’s Christmas parking offer. The date of Canterbury’s Christmas lights switch-on had not been published on 29 September.
