The fastest Canterbury to London train takes 53 minutes, Canterbury West to St Pancras by high speed. Times from both stations, 2026 season ticket costs and last trains.

Canterbury’s oddity as a commuter city is that it has two stations on two different lines to London, and which one you use changes your journey more than which train you catch. Canterbury West has the high-speed service to St Pancras in under an hour; Canterbury East, despite the name just a fifteen-minute walk away, runs to Victoria. This page sets out the real journey times from each, how often trains run, first and last services, and what a season ticket costs in 2026, with a source for every figure.

Canterbury West: the fast way in

St Pancras International, via the high-speed line

The headline service. Southeastern’s high-speed trains leave Canterbury West, join the HS1 line at Ashford International and run non-stop into St Pancras International, next to King’s Cross and the Eurostar. The fastest journey is 53 minutes and the average about 59 (Trainline). Off peak it runs once an hour (Wikipedia, Canterbury West). On the weekday timetable the first departure is around 04:18 and the last around 22:23 (Trainline).

What it means for you: if your office is anywhere near the Euston Road, Farringdon or the Eurostar, this is the train that makes a Canterbury commute genuinely workable. The catch is the fare: high speed carries a premium, set out in the season ticket section below.

Charing Cross, via Tonbridge

The same station also sends a classic mainline service the long way round, via Ashford, Tonbridge and Sevenoaks, into Charing Cross, calling at Waterloo East and London Bridge on the way in (ShowMeTheJourney). It takes about 1 hour 45 at best (Trainline), roughly hourly. It is nobody’s fast option, but it is direct to the West End and it is the cheaper season ticket.

Canterbury East: the Victoria line

Canterbury East sits on the Chatham main line, running via Faversham, Sittingbourne and Chatham into London Victoria. The fastest direct journey is 1 hour 32 minutes, with a typical run nearer 1 hour 48 (Trainline). Off peak it is hourly, and in the peaks additional services run to and from London Bridge and Cannon Street, which is what makes East workable for City commuters (Wikipedia, Canterbury East). Weekday first and last departures are around 04:16 and 22:19 (Trainline).

Despite the names, the two stations are less than a mile apart on the western side of the city, and Canterbury East connects to the centre by a footbridge over the ring road onto the city wall path (Wikipedia). From Canterbury West the walk to the cathedral quarter is about ten to fifteen minutes (ShowMeTheJourney). So pick your station by destination in London, not by which is nearer your house: the walk between them costs less time than the wrong route does.

What a season ticket costs in 2026

Both stations share the same season ticket products, valid from “Canterbury East or Canterbury West” (Trainline season tickets):

Canterbury to London season tickets, 2026 prices
TicketWeeklyMonthlyAnnual
London Terminals, standard (not valid on high speed)£177.50£681.60£7,100
London Terminals, high speed permitted£235.90£905.90£9,436

The gap is the price of the 53-minute journey: about £2,336 a year buys the right to use the St Pancras high-speed trains rather than the mainline routes. Against a five-day office week that is roughly £9 per working day; against a two or three-day hybrid pattern, many commuters find daily or flexi tickets beat a season, so price your actual week before committing. Fares change each January; check the Trainline season ticket page or any station ticket office for the live price before buying.
