Herne Bay switches on at 1pm on Sunday 22 November 2026, and its volunteers still need £20,000. Canterbury and Whitstable have not published 2026 dates yet.
Three towns in this district hold a Christmas lights switch-on, and on 29 September 2026 only one of them has a date in public. Herne Bay’s is Sunday 22 November 2026, 1pm to 6.30pm. Canterbury and Whitstable have published nothing for 2026.
Updated 29 September: the Christmas market has confirmed it opens on Thursday 12 November. Canterbury’s own switch-on date is still unpublished.
Herne Bay: 22 November, and it is not yet funded
The date comes straight from the organisers, hernebaychristmaslights.co.uk: “Our 2026 switch on event will take place on Sunday 22 November 2026 from 1pm to 6.30pm.”
The same page carries a warning that most switch-on listings leave out. The event and the lights together cost over £20,000 this year, the whole thing is run by volunteers as part of the Herne Bay Coastal Community Team, and the money is not in the bank. Their words: “Only with your help, support and donations will we have Christmas lights in 2026!”
Where the £20,000 goes, as the team sets it out:
- a three year deal with Gala Lights, who erect, take down, store and maintain the display, including new lights and cross-overs bought last year
- the Christmas trees, with a possible switch to a sustainable option at Wimereux Square
- contractors to install and remove the trees
- insurances, planning permissions and administration
Fundraising already in the diary: a quiz on Friday 25 September at 7pm, £5 a head in teams of four, at the Ex Serviceman’s Club on William Street. A race night is being planned and the annual Christmas lights raffle is due to run again. The team’s contact address is hello@hbcct.co.uk.
If you want a switch-on in Herne Bay this year, that is what it rests on. It is a genuinely useful thing to know in September rather than in December.
Canterbury: nothing published for 2026
Canterbury’s city centre lights are paid for and organised by Canterbury BID, funded by a levy on businesses in the BID area rather than by the council. As of 3 September 2026 it has published no 2026 switch-on date, and we can say that having read its pages rather than having failed to.
Its Christmas hub is still headed “Christmas in Canterbury 2025” and still lists last year’s programme: the Christmas Light Parade on 14 November, a LEGO window trail from 14 November to 24 December, late night shopping on 13 December and a Christmas window competition judged on 6 December. Nothing has been swapped out for this year.
Its events calendar is more telling, because that one is current. November 2026 carries three entries and none of them is the switch-on: the tail of the Canterbury Festival, a Heritage Expo on 28 November and East Kent Mind’s Mental Elf Run on 29 November. December 2026 has one entry, a festive makers market. The BID is clearly still filling the diary in.
What the BID has published about the event, from its own page on the switch-on, though the figures date from 2018 and should be treated as the shape of the thing rather than current numbers:
- the switch-on takes place in St George’s Street, mid-November, on a Friday, running about two hours in the late afternoon
- the Christmas Market launches the same day and trades late that evening
- 5 miles of lights across 21 streets, installed by Gala Lights, the same contractor Herne Bay uses
- around 5,000 people attend
- the annual cost of the decorations was £66,000
That last figure is eight years old and the lights have been extended since, so read it as the order of magnitude, not the bill.
The market has now published its 2026 dates: it opens on Thursday 12 November and runs to Christmas Eve. Neither the market’s site nor the BID’s November 2026 events calendar mentions a switch-on, checked on 29 September, so do not assume the lights go on the same day.
Whitstable: Whitsparkle, and no 2026 date
Whitstable’s switch-on is Whitsparkle, a lantern-lit parade run entirely by volunteers after the town went several years without a council-led or traders-led event. Children make lanterns at a workshop at the South Quay Shed at the harbour and carry them in the evening parade, which walks from the harbour into Harbour Street and up the High Street, switching Christmas tree lights on as it goes.
No 2026 date has been published by the organisers. The most recent listing we can find for the parade gives a Saturday 29 November with the tree switch-on at 4.30pm and roads closed from 4.15pm to 6pm, but it carries no year, and 29 November falls on a Sunday in 2026, so it describes the 2025 event and not this one. Do not plan around it.
If the road closure element repeats, it will show up on the roadworks and travel page before it shows up anywhere else.
Parking on switch-on days
All three towns run their switch-ons on late afternoons and evenings when the central car parks are at their fullest, and Whitstable’s involves a road closure through the town centre. The tariffs, the free periods and the park and ride options are on the Canterbury parking page.
The city council also lays on free Christmas parking each year, tied to the switch-on and to the shopping weeks after it. Nothing has been announced for 2026. This is what it did in 2025, published on 7 November that year, and it is a fair guide to the shape of the offer:
- Canterbury: free park and ride at all three sites for anyone arriving from 2pm on the switch-on day itself, and free all day on a Sunday later in the month. The catch in 2025 was the return journey: the last park and ride bus back to Wincheap left the city centre at 7.20pm, hours before the evening finished, and the council pointed people at ordinary Stagecoach services to New Dover Road and Sturry Road instead, the last of which went at 11pm and 11.35pm.
- Herne Bay: free all day at William Street car park on three Sundays in December, one of which coincided with the Santas on the Run charity event.
- Whitstable: free all day at Middle Wall and Gorrell Tank on three Thursdays in December, a day chosen after the town’s businesses said it worked better for them than a Sunday.
If the same pattern holds, the Herne Bay dates will be Sundays and the Whitstable dates Thursdays, and the Canterbury offer will be pinned to the switch-on whenever it is announced.
What we will update
Herne Bay’s date is fixed and this page will carry the running order once the volunteers publish it. Canterbury’s and Whitstable’s dates go in the moment their organisers publish them, which on past form means late October or early November for Canterbury and around the same time for Whitstable. We will not fill the gap with last year’s dates in the meantime.
