Administrators were appointed to Bemix on 14 August. The Canterbury learning disability charity spent £194k more than it earned in its last filed year.
Joint administrators have been appointed to Bemix, the Canterbury charity that supports people with learning disabilities and autistic people across Kent and Medway.
The appointment took effect on 14 August 2026 and was published in The London Gazette on 24 August. Bemix’s last filed accounts show 73 employees.
What the record says
The Gazette notice records the appointment of Charles Turner and Bradley Parrott, both of Opus Restructuring LLP, as joint administrators. The case is in the High Court of Justice, Business and Property Courts of England and Wales, Insolvency and Companies List, under court number CR-2026-006374.
The notice gives Bemix’s registered office as Office 44, Canterbury Innovation Centre, University Road, Canterbury, CT2 7FG, and describes its nature of business as a charity providing education and training.
Bemix is charity number 1205783. It is a charitable incorporated organisation, registered in that form on 17 November 2023, having previously traded as a community interest company incorporated on 21 October 2002. Because it is a CIO, Companies House holds no filing history for it and refers enquiries to the Charity Commission.
The finances behind it
The Charity Commission register holds one full year of accounts for the charity in its current form, for the year ending 31 July 2024.
That year Bemix took in £1,538,529 and spent £1,732,350. It ran a deficit of £193,821, about 13 per cent of its income.
The income was almost entirely earned rather than donated. £1.53m came from charitable activities and just £341 from donations and legacies. Of the total, £1,237,229 came from four government contracts, which is a little over 80 per cent of everything the charity received.
The register also shows the charity’s reporting has slipped. Its annual return and accounts for the year ending 31 July 2025 are overdue by 88 days, as the register showed on 27 August. The previous year’s return, for 2023/24, was filed on 21 August 2025, which the Commission records as 82 days late.
A service had already moved out
Three weeks before the administrators were appointed, Bemix announced that one of its operations was leaving the charity.
On 28 July, updated on 4 August, Bemix published a joint statement saying its Supported Employment provision had become part of Q+, a separate charity. The statement says the move followed “a rigorous process involving the Department for Education, commissioners and both Boards of Trustees”. It says Q+ “has demonstrated the governance, financial resilience and strategic leadership required to support bemix SE as it enters its next chapter”.
It also says learners, families, commissioners and employers “can expect continuity of services”.
Q+ is charity number 1169817. Its own register entry records income of £3,521,200 in the year to 31 August 2025 against expenditure of £3,088,028, and its reporting is up to date. Its two core activities are Queensmill College, a further education and supported internship programme for young people with autism aged 19 to 25, and QHouse, a respite centre.
Neither Bemix’s statement nor the Gazette notice links the two events. The sequence, on the public record, is that the Supported Employment transfer was announced on 28 July and the administrators were appointed on 14 August.
What Bemix does
Bemix’s registered objects are the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of learning disability and autism, advancing education about equality and diversity, and preventing social exclusion. Its register entry describes running “projects which support people to learn skills, gain qualifications and become more confident and independent”, and working with employers to make their workplaces inclusive.
Its published venue list covers three areas: the Canterbury Innovation Centre for the Canterbury area, the 5a Community Hub in Medway, and The Pulse in Sittingbourne for Swale. The charity also runs Oliver McGowan mandatory training on learning disability and autism for health and social care staff.
What it means for you
If you or a family member uses a Bemix service, the joint administrators are the people who can tell you what continues. The Gazette notice gives a contact number for them at Opus Restructuring LLP, 01908 752 944, and their address as 322 High Holborn, London WC1V 7PB.
Administration is not the same as liquidation. Under Schedule B1 of the Insolvency Act 1986, an administrator’s first statutory objective is rescuing the company as a going concern, and the alternatives only apply if that is not reasonably practicable. Nothing on the public record so far says which of those Bemix is heading for.
For anyone employed by the charity, the administrators are also the point of contact on wages, notice and redundancy claims.
