Ralph Hadley finished 6th of 134 at the Topper World Championships in Brittany, then 9th in the Gold Fleet at the Nationals. Three Whitstable sailors competed.

A Whitstable Yacht Club sailor has finished sixth in the world in his class, then ninth at the national championships three weeks later.

Ralph Hadley races for Tankerton Bay Sailing Club and Whitstable Yacht Club. He placed 6th of 134 boats at the International Topper Class World Championships in Brittany. The event was held at the Société des Régates de Saint Pierre Quiberon and finished on 31 July.

He then took 9th in the Gold Fleet at the Noble Marine Topper National Championships at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. The club reported that the event began on 11 August, and the final results were stamped on 14 August.

He was one of three Whitstable Yacht Club sailors at the Nationals.

The results

Sailor Event Fleet Place
Ralph Hadley Topper Worlds, Quiberon Gold 6th of 134
James Martin Topper Worlds, Quiberon Gold 61st of 134
Ralph Hadley Topper Nationals, Weymouth Gold 9th of 53
Jack Taylor Topper Nationals, Weymouth Gold 35th of 53
James Martin Topper Nationals, Weymouth Silver 7th of 52

The Topper 5.3 is a single-handed dinghy sailed largely by young sailors. Both championships split the entry into fleets after a qualifying series, so a Gold Fleet place is drawn from the fastest boats in the event.

At the Nationals, 105 boats sailed the 5.3 class, 53 of them in the Gold Fleet. Three days of qualifying were followed by the championship series on the Thursday and Friday. The club’s report described conditions across the week ranging from five knots to over 20.

Both the world and national titles went to the same sailor, Hari Clark of Draycote Water Sailing Club, who won six of the eight races at Quiberon and five in a row at Weymouth.

James Martin took five top-ten race finishes in the seven-race Silver Fleet series. Whitstable Yacht Club’s own report, published on 19 August and written by Niall Martin, said Ralph Hadley was “in the mix every race” after an early start in one race used up his only discard.

The Nationals were the last Topper regatta for Ralph Hadley and Jack Taylor. Both are moving up to the ILCA 4 class.

A national championship on Whitstable’s own water

The club had a second championship in the same fortnight, this one on its own stretch of sea. Whitstable Yacht Club hosted the Wanderer National Championship and the Wayfarer Southern Championship on 15 and 16 August, with four races sailed over the two days, two each afternoon, according to the club’s event page.

The championship weekend was preceded by three days of open cruising for the Wanderer fleet:

  • 12 August, to Shellness
  • 13 August, to Swale Marina
  • 14 August, to the Shipwright’s Arms

Entry was free to Wanderer Class Owners Association members and £30 for other Wanderer and Wayfarer sailors, with the fee including the three cruising days. The club warned entrants that harbour access would close at 10am on Saturday 15 August because it was Whitstable Harbour Day.

Full results for that event had not been published on the club’s results page when this was written.
