Sea Street shuts and Harbour Street runs one way northbound from 21 September to 9 October for sewer repairs. Every changed street, turn ban and bus stop.

Driving through the middle of Whitstable will work differently for almost three weeks from Monday 21 September. Sewer repairs will close Sea Street, and Harbour Street’s one-way system will run in the opposite direction while they go on.

The plans are set out in a temporary traffic order Kent County Council published on 4 September. The works are estimated to finish by 9 October.

The order covers five streets at once:

  • B2205 Sea Street closes outside number 20, with no through traffic between the Red Lion Lane and Harbour Street junctions.
  • Harbour Street closes westbound between the western harbour entrance and High Street, and becomes one way northbound from High Street towards the harbour. Its normal one-way direction is reversed between Woodlawn Street and High Street.
  • High Street closes southbound for about 20 metres south of the Terrys Lane junction.
  • Cromwell Road closes eastbound at the Oxford Street junction, so there is no access into Cromwell Road from Oxford Street.
  • Horsebridge Road’s one-way order is suspended between Red Lion Lane and Terrys Lane, for what the order calls essential access and exit.

A set of turn bans supports the closures:

  • no right turn from Sea Street onto Harbour Street
  • no right turn from Red Lion Lane onto Harbour Street
  • no right turns from Horsebridge Road and Terrys Lane onto High Street
  • no left turns from Victoria Street, Albert Street and Woodlawn Street onto Harbour Street

Through traffic past the Sea Street closure is signed via Harbour Street. Traffic displaced from Harbour Street’s closed westbound stretch is signed via Cromwell Road, Oxford Street and High Street, and access is kept open as far as the harbour itself.

Buses move, and some parking survives

The order says the bus stops will be moved to the west side of Harbour Street, with some limited parking allowed on the east side. If you catch a bus in the centre of town, check which side of the road it leaves from before the 21st.

A proposal, but a detailed one

Kent County Council says it intends to make this order, which in the county’s standard wording means it is a proposal rather than a made decision, and start dates on works of this kind do slip. The level of detail published, down to individual turn bans and the bus stop arrangements, is what the county issues when a scheme is imminent. The stated reason is sewer repair works; the order does not name the utility carrying them out.

The notice is signed by Simon Jones, Kent County Council’s Corporate Director for Growth, Environment and Transport, and dated 4 September 2026 (Public Notice Portal).

What it means for you

  • If you drive into the harbour area, the habit you rely on reverses: for those three weeks, Harbour Street flows northbound only, from High Street towards the harbour, and you cannot get into it by turning left off Victoria, Albert or Woodlawn Street.
  • If you live on Sea Street or Red Lion Lane, the through route is gone; access is maintained up to the closure point, with the one-way on Sea Street suspended both ways so residents can get in and out.
  • If you use the buses, stops on Harbour Street move to the western side.
  • If you are visiting, the harbour, the beach and the shops all stay reachable on foot throughout; this is a traffic order, not a closure of the town.
