122 new firms registered in the Canterbury district in September, up from 84 in August. Herne Bay more than doubled; five are community interest companies.
A total of 122 new companies were registered at addresses in the Canterbury district in September. That is up from 84 in August, and from 95 in September last year, on the same search of the Companies House register.
We counted every company incorporated between 1 and 30 September 2026 with a registered office in the CT1 to CT6 postcodes. We then checked every postcode and kept only those inside Canterbury district. The register was searched on Tuesday 6 October.
Herne Bay more than doubled
The rise came mostly from the coast. Herne Bay’s CT6 postcode had 30 new companies in September, against 14 in August.
| Area | August 2026 | September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| CT1, Canterbury | 29 | 33 |
| CT6, Herne Bay | 14 | 30 |
| CT5, Whitstable | 24 | 27 |
| CT2, north Canterbury, Sturry and Blean | 9 | 18 |
| CT4, southern villages | 5 | 9 |
| CT3, eastern villages | 3 | 5 |
| Total | 84 | 122 |
One month is a small sample, so read the jump as a busy September rather than a trend. It was also busier than September 2025, which had 95.
The new restaurants, shops and salons
Most new companies are consultancies, property firms and online sellers run from a home address. A handful give a shopfront address on a high street:
- Bistro Vyshyvanka Ltd, registered 3 September at 56-57 Ivy Lane, Canterbury, classed as a restaurant and event caterer
- Herne Bay Fish & Grill Limited, registered 3 September at 45 Kings Road, Herne Bay, classed as a takeaway
- Paradiso Canterbury Ltd, registered 7 September at 20a Lower Bridge Street, a hair and beauty business
- Spice of India 2026 Ltd, registered 17 September at 40 Oxford Street, Whitstable, classed as a takeaway
- Whitstable Local Store Ltd, registered 21 September further along at 64a Oxford Street, classed as a convenience store
- Leathermakers Limited, registered 25 September at 26a St Peter’s Street, Canterbury, a leather goods retailer
Two more are food businesses away from the centre. Hunters Food Ltd is registered at 254a Sturry Road. Nxtion Food Market Canterbury Ltd is registered at Merton Farm, south of the city, and is classed as a fruit, vegetable and food retailer. Curious Times Nursery Ltd, registered on 28 September at Waddenhall, near Petham, is classed as child day-care.
A registered office is the address a company gives Companies House. It is not always where it trades, and a new company is not proof that a business has opened. We have not visited any of these addresses.
Five community interest companies
Five of September’s new companies are community interest companies, set up to use their profits for a community purpose rather than for shareholders:
- Bioregion East Kent CIC, registered at School Lane, in Blean Forest ward
- Digital and AI Training CIC, registered at 209a High Street, Herne Bay
- Kent Independent Autism and ADHD Service CIC, registered in Whitstable
- Literacy & Wellbeing Empowerment CIC, registered in Sturry ward
- Project Mirage Dawn CIC, registered at 20 High Street, Herne Bay
What the new companies do
Companies choose up to four activity codes when they register, so one company can count in more than one group. Across the 122:
- 17 are in property: letting, managing or developing it
- 12 sell online or by mail order
- 12 are in software, IT or publishing
- 11 are consultancies or professional services
- 10 are holding or investment companies
- 9 are in education or training
- 8 are in health or care
- 7 each are in food and drink, shops, construction trades, and hair, beauty and personal services
- 6 are in sport and leisure, and 4 in the motor trade
One address, nine new companies
Nine of the 122 share a single registered office: Camburgh House, 27 New Dover Road. It is the office of the chartered accountants Burgess Hodgson. A search of the register shows 1,230 active companies at that postcode.
That is ordinary practice. Using an accountant’s address as a registered office keeps a director’s home address off a public database. It does mean the CT1 figure includes companies that may do their business elsewhere in the district, or outside it.

How we counted
We ran one advanced search of the register for each of the CT1 to CT6 postcode areas, for companies incorporated between 1 and 30 September 2026. That found 137 companies. We matched every postcode against the official postcode directory and kept the 122 inside Canterbury district. We dropped 10 addresses in the parts of CT3 and CT4 that fall in Dover and Folkestone and Hythe districts, and 5 that were not in Kent at all. The August and September 2025 figures used the same method. The 2025 count includes 6 companies that have since been dissolved.
