No trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Last Christmas Eve the final trains left London at 20.34 for Canterbury West and 21.10 for Canterbury East.
Southeastern has not yet published its Christmas and New Year 2026 timetable for Canterbury, Whitstable or Herne Bay. National Rail’s festive summary for 2026/27 is out, and it fixes the two days with no trains at all. For everything else the best guide is what Southeastern ran last Christmas, which is still the version on its own website, plus the two facts that decide most journeys: the last train home on Christmas Eve, and which London terminal is shut on which day.
The quick answer
No trains run on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, and most operators including Southeastern run nothing on Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December. National Rail’s Christmas period runs Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027, and it says operator details start appearing “from the beginning of October”. Last Christmas Eve the last train to Canterbury West left St Pancras at 20.34 and the last to Canterbury East left Victoria at 21.10, with nothing on the network after about 10pm.
What is confirmed for 2026/27
National Rail’s Christmas and New Year 2026/27 travel summary covers “Thursday 24 December 2026 until Monday 4 January 2027 inclusive”. It confirms “there will be no National Rail services on Christmas Day as usual” and that on Boxing Day “most train operators will have no service”. The only specific engineering project it names so far is at Birmingham New Street. It says full details of major works “will be published here when available” and that operator-by-operator information is added from early October.
Southeastern’s own planned engineering work page, read the same day, runs only to mid-October 2026 and carries nothing for December. Its Christmas and New Year services page is still the 2025/26 edition.
Last year’s Southeastern timetable, as a guide
This is what Southeastern published for Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026. It is last year’s plan, not this year’s, but Southeastern’s festive shape has been consistent and it shows the pattern to expect.
- Saturday 20 December to Sunday 4 January: “a revised timetable will run”.
- Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 December: all routes open on a Saturday timetable with extra trains on some routes. On Christmas Eve “services across the network will finish earlier, with no trains running after approximately 22:00”.
- Christmas Day and Boxing Day: “No Southeastern trains will run”.
- Saturday 27 to Tuesday 30 December: “no Southeastern services at London Victoria because of major engineering work, trains are diverted to London Cannon Street”, no service between London and Beckenham Junction via Herne Hill, Brixton closed. That mattered for Canterbury East, Whitstable and Herne Bay, whose London trains normally use Victoria.
- Monday 29 to Wednesday 31 December: off-peak fares all day except Travelcards and journeys wholly within London.
- New Year’s Eve: extra late trains from Charing Cross, Cannon Street and London Bridge after midnight.
- Thursday 1 January: Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Waterloo East closed, most trains diverted to Victoria, and buses replacing trains on several stretches including Canterbury East to Dover.
- Friday 2 January: Charing Cross and Waterloo East closed, most trains diverted to Victoria, a limited service at Cannon Street and London Bridge.

Last trains home on Christmas Eve 2025
Southeastern published a last trains on Christmas Eve table for 2025. These are the last direct departures from London to the district’s stations. Expect similar times this year, and check the 2026 table when it appears.
| To | From St Pancras | From Victoria |
|---|---|---|
| Canterbury West, Sturry, Chartham | 20.34 (21.07 changing at Ashford International) | no direct service |
| Canterbury East | no direct service | 21.10 |
| Whitstable and Herne Bay | 20.20 | 20.40 |
| Faversham | 21.20 | 21.10 |
The Canterbury West figure is the high speed route; the 21.07 is a later option that needs a change at Ashford. If you are coming back from a Christmas Eve afternoon in London, the practical cut-off for the whole district is around half past eight.
Buses
Stagecoach South East had not published Christmas 2026 bus times when we checked on 25 September, and its Christmas 2025 page has been taken down. Its festive page normally appears in December at stagecoachbus.com. We will add the Canterbury, Triangle and park and ride arrangements here when they are out.
Christmas parking: last year’s concessions
Canterbury City Council announced its festive parking offer on 7 November 2025 (free parking this Christmas). Last year it was free park and ride at all three sites from 2pm on the switch-on day and all day on Sunday 23 November, free all-day parking at William Street in Herne Bay on Sundays 7, 14 and 21 December, and free all-day parking at Middle Wall and Gorrell Tank in Whitstable on Thursdays 4, 11 and 18 December. The council also warned that the last park and ride bus back to Wincheap left the city centre at 7.20pm. The 2026 offer should follow in early November; our parking in Canterbury page has the everyday rates and our Christmas lights switch-on page tracks the switch-on date.
Still to be confirmed
Southeastern’s 2026/27 festive timetable, the Christmas Eve last-train table, any Victoria or Charing Cross closures between 27 December and 2 January, and the Stagecoach Christmas timetable. National Rail says operator detail arrives from early October, and the engineering picture usually firms up by mid-November. This page will be updated as each appears. For normal timetables and fares see Canterbury to London train times, and for road closures see Canterbury roadworks and travel.
